7 Steps to Executing a split dodge
Lacrosse is North America’s oldest sport. Originating with Native American tribes in the northeast the game used to be played to prepare clansmen for war, to settle disputes between other tribes or just for fun to pay homage to the “Creator.” Over time the game was adopted by French Missionaries and eventually began to evolve. (I.e. field size, sticks, number of player. Currently lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in America. The game has changed immensely over centuries and has become popular in high schools and colleges. Now there are specific strategies, and designated “moves” that help a lacrosse player improve his or her play. One of these moves is known as the split dodge.
The following contains seven tips that help a lacrosse player perform an effective split dodge:
1.) Eye Contact- The first step to executing a settled split dodge requires eye contact with the defender. A good defender will be forcing you to one side of the field and will be watching your hips to determine which direction you are dodging. (Defenders focus on dodgers hips because ones hips cannot go in one direction as one’s body travels in another.) The goal is to draw eye contact with the defender so as to distract their focus from your hips so it is easier to score on the defense.
2.) Stutter Step- Assuming you are dodging to your strong hand side keep the stick in your strong hand so the dodge is an easy left-to-left or right-to-right move. The stutter step is partially to freeze the defender before committing to the dodge and is routine to help a dodger set their feet before splitting.
3.) Glance- This is where the eye contact comes into play. As you stutter step and are about to plant, just glance to the opposite side of the field you are dodging to. If you maintained eye contact until this point, it should improve the overall effectiveness of the dodge. If the defender sees you look that way and plant a fake in the same direction it should be enough to get him to take a drop-step and bite on your dodge.
4.) Plant- As you plant you are already passed the halfway point of the dodge, the mental and set-up aspects are in the past and have positioned you to complete and effective dodge. Now for the majority of the physical work. As you plant, hopefully your defender has drop stepped in the direction of your plant, you need to explode off of that foot and commit to the dodge as you go hard to the cage.
